Why People Should Not Do Drugs

This is from a story on MSN about a California couple who tried to sell their child.

girl on drugsThis is what drugs like meth will do to you.  These kids think it is cool when they first try it.  They don’t realize that they are becoming addicted to it.  If they stick with it long enough, it eventually takes over their lives.  They end up doing anything humanly possible including trying to sell their own children so that they have money for the drugs.

This story is a shame and a total tragedy.  It is a shame that we haven’t convinced teenagers and other young adults that this is the reality of what these hardcore drugs will do to you.  It is not like smoking a joint and getting giggly.  You are really flirting with disaster.  There is not one of these drug addicts that wanted to become addicted.  It happens without you knowing that it will happen.  Then you can’t get away from it.

The solution to the drug problem isn’t with legislation.  As long as people want to do it, they are going to do it.  It doesn’t matter if it is legal or not.  The way to fix the problem is to make it un-cool in the eyes of the people who are most likely to try it.  If you make it out to be un-cool, they will have the natural tendency to avoid it.  The peer pressure will work against trying the drug instead of working for it.

Peer pressure and the desire to be socially popular are the main driving factors behind experimenting with drugs like this.  That is where the anti-drug movement needs to focus on.  They aren’t going to accomplish their goals through legislation.  It just isn’t going to work.
